William Wordsworth said, “Poetry is powerful emotion recollected in tranquility.” Travel writer Tim Cahill adopted the line and said, “Adventure is physical or emotional discomfort recollected in tranquility.” I believe Cahill nailed it!
There is nothing like arriving home from a far flung place and sitting down at my desk. From that perspective, losing a wallet to pickpockets was an adventure not to be missed. Being dragged out into the Java Sea by a strong undertow and nearly drowning was a fortuitous event. Yes, from a place of tranquility, it’s all good. Sitting at the safety of my desk puts everything into perspective, and the most pleasant thing I can think to do is to write about it… and then plan the next adventure.
